"LET THE BIBLE SPEAK"
Is it possible for a person once saved to become lost? The scriptures address this question in several passages. The possibility of falling is affirmed repeatedly. In our previous articles concerning the graces that are to be added to our faith, we find the following: "But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall," 2 Pet 1:9-10. The person who fails to add the Christian graces has forgotten that he was cleansed (saved) from his old sins. Then the Christian is warned "make your calling and election sure." By doing so the scriptures tell us "ye shall never fall." The Holy Spirit, in this passage clearly warns us of the danger of falling. The Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians, "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall," 1 Cor. 10:12. The Apostle Paul also wrote to the Galatians, who were attempting to be justified by the Law of Moses, "You have become estranged
from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace," Gal. 5:4. The Apostle Peter showed the terrible condition of the saved person who returns to sin in the following passage: "For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: 'A dog returns to his own vomit,' and, 'a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire," 2 Pet. 2:20-22. Add to this James' inspired testimony: "Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins," James 5:19-20.
